A Note Of Repentance To All Whom I Have Taught Or Endorsed Henry Blackaby or Beth Moore

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. James 3:1

Dear Sisters in Christ,
It is with regret and repentance in my heart that I am sending this letter to you. As you know over the past four years I participated in leading and facilitating several Bible studies including specifically authors Beth Moore and Henry Blackaby. This was a great privilege and opportunity, and it was something I enjoyed greatly as I fellowshipped with each of you desired to grow together in the knowledge and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ by the study of His Word.

However, as it has pleased our Lord to reveal to me over the past six months and while I never intended to EVER MISUSE THE WORD or take it out of context in ANY WAY so as to mislead or harm anyone, and while I am not saying that was the intent of the above teachers I mentioned, I have come to realize that my lack of full understanding of God’s Word, in particular with regard to the closure of the Cannon of Scripture and also my irresponsibility in not fully evaluating the above teachers before agreeing to promote or endorse them by leading studies, it is quite possible that I have mislead some of you. For this I sincerely ask your forgiveness and I repent. I have stepped down from teaching at this time as I desire to not take lightly the great privilege and honor it is to teach the Word of God and I recognize that I have much more to learn.

Now as to specifics for what I am referring to, it has come to my knowledge that the above teachers, while I have no intention of judging their hearts or motives, have misused God’s Word and/or aligned themselves up with others who have done so.

Regarding Beth Moore, through a series of circumstances this summer (you can read about it here: https://hearshisvoice.wordpress.com/2011/10/12/104/) I became acquainted with a movement known as, “Spiritual Formation” and in this movement in particular I became aware of a type of prayer being promoted known as “Contemplative Prayer” (also goes by the title “listening prayer” and “centering prayer” also may hear the term “God’s whispers” or listening for that “still small voice”) This type of prayer is touted as being handed down to us by what are known as the “Desert Fathers” which is used to describe many of the monks and priests of the first centuries. While on the surface this prayer seems to be about contemplating our Lord as we pray which would be Biblical, it is in fact a prayer that endorses the notion that in order to really “connect with God’ one must “empty or quiet their minds of all thought” in order to “hear God speak to us”. Many of the proponents of Contemplative prayer go so far as to say that we should learn from those who practice this type of prayer in the eastern religions, such as Hindus and Zen Buddhists. Well, sadly, NO WHERE in Scripture are we ever taught to “empty our minds”. Sure, we are told to “Be still and know that I am God” which is the most popular verse of Scripture used to endorse this prayer, a careful study of Psalm 46:10 reveals that the psalmist is referring to our anxiety and not being anxious about our lives as God is in charge. This passage is not an instruction in prayer at all. In fact, if we study scripture we know that Jesus told us numerous times to be watchful in prayer because we have an enemy that seeks to destroy us. We are told to “renew our minds” by the Word of God, not to empty them.

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. Luke 12:37

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41

One of the leading proponents of Contemplative prayer is a man named Richard Foster. The most dangerous aspect of this teaching and the movement known as “Spiritual Formation” is that there is a blurring of lines between Christianity and other religions. In fact, Mr. Foster, makes no apologies on his ministry website, Renovare, he states the following:

“Renovaré is a nonprofit Christian organization headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, and active worldwide. We seek to resource, fuel, model, and advocate more intentional living and spiritual formation among Christians and those wanting a deeper connection with God. A foundational presence in the spiritual formation movement for over 20 years, Renovaré is Christian in commitment, ecumenical in breadth, and international in scope.

In his very popular book, Celebration of Discipline, Richard Foster describes an experience of “contemplative prayer” in this way,
“In your imagination allow your spiritual body, shining with light, to rise out of your physical body. Look back so that you can see yourself lying in the grass and reassure your body that you will return momentarily. Imagine your spiritual self, alive and vibrant, rising up through the clouds and into the stratosphere. . . Go deeper and deeper into outer space until there is nothing except the warm presence of the eternal Creator. Rest in His presence. Listen quietly, anticipating the unanticipated. Note carefully any instruction given. With time and experience you will be able to distinguish readily between mere human thought that may bubble up to the conscious mind and the True Spirit which inwardly moves upon the heart. (Foster: 27, 28)”

Sisters, that is NOT biblical prayer! That is called Astral Projection by the New Age movement.
I hope you notice right away that NO ONE BUT CHRISTIANS WHO HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN BY THE SPIRIT can have a “deeper connection with God”. Mr. Foster is endorsing that ANYONE who desires a deeper connection with God can achieve this connection practicing the many “spiritual disciplines” he endorses which include “contemplative prayer” and other extra biblical means.
What does this have to do with Beth Moore? Ms. Moore participated and endorsed contemplative prayer WITH MR. RICHARD FOSTER in a video on 2006 called “Be Still”. (And Yes I viewed it myself) She unashamedly endorsed contemplative prayer as a means by which we can hear God in our lives and have a deeper connection to God. She also quotes other contemplatives in many of her studies (including one I led with you called, “When Godly People Do Ungodly Things”) such as two men by the names of Basil Pennington and Brennon Manning.

Here are some online references that speak more about Beth’s participation and endorsement in this unbiblical form of prayer.

I highly recommend this video done by former Roman Catholic Priest who was converted years ago and is warning people about this very type of teaching: http://youtu.be/OfI9H1ZajLs

I can provide you much more evidence that Richard Foster who is a Quaker and sadly he is widely accepted as offering Christians much to learn regarding prayer, is not handling the Word of God correctly and in fact, promotes that ANYONE desiring a closer relationship with God can have it. ANYONE: regardless if they are Christian or not. In fact I have started a blog where I am writing about what God has shown me this summer and you are welcome to go there for more information. http://www.hearshisvoice.wordpress.com There is a dangerous movement coming into many evangelical churches and if I were to write to you all that I have learned this past six months, this letter would be even longer. But I am happy to share more with any of you who desire to know and I sincerely hope you will at least consider giving an ear to what I have to say as one who loves the Lord and loves you as my sisters. You can email me at jcdisciple07@gmail.com. I will send you as much material as you want documenting my concerns over Richard Foster and the endorsement of him by Beth Moore and others in the evangelical world. And again, I sincerely ask your forgiveness for my not being more cautious myself as to who I endorse or align myself with in teaching.

We are told in the Word several times that when false teachers, as Foster is one, are discovered we are not to promote them, but to flee from their teaching and expose them. By endorsing him and being in his video, Beth Moore is lending a full endorsement to him. Just so you know, I did contact Living Proof Ministries with my concerns, but received no reply. Several others online have indicated that she has been contacted and either has not contacted them back or has maintained that she stands behind her promotion and participation in the Be Still video of 2006.

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles CONTRARY TO THE DOCTRINE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN ; AVOID THEM. 18For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. Romans 16:17-`8

I want to also thank a few of you who during the time that I was leading “When Godly People Do Ungodly Things” were alert that something wasn’t quite right and came to me about Beth Moore and her teachings. At that time my discernment skills were not as sharp as they should have been, but your questioning planted a seed that the Lord later used to deliver me from her bad teaching and I hope now to set that straight for you and any others who may have been led astray by me. Again, I am truly sorry.

Now, as to Mr. Blackaby, my concern with him is similar but hinges more on the endorsement that God is still speaking to us and giving us revelations today. LET ME BE CLEAR HERE while, I do not disagree that the Holy Spirit guides us by conviction of sin, bringing to our remembrance passages of Scripture that we have studied, and pointing always to Jesus, I do not believe that the prophetic gifts and visions are still occurring today, Scripture and church history has taught and confirmed via numerous trials over various heresies that these gifts were poured out during the days of the apostles to verify they were from God and for the writing down of the canon of Scripture, but as the cannon was closed, these charismatic gifts ceased. Again we are not taught in scripture to sit in silence and empty our minds in an attempt to “listen to God”

In his book, Hearing God’s Voice, Mr. Blackaby even states this,

“There is nothing more important in life than understanding when God is speaking to you. If you are disoriented to God’s voice, your life is dangerously vulnerable. The Bible indicates conclusively that God does speak to people and that he does guide them in his will. The problem of not hearing from God never lies with God. He does communicate his will. It is not a matter of us searching in vain for God’s hidden will. He readily reveals it to those who show themselves obedient to do it. If you do not hear God’s voice, could it be your heart is not ready to respond to what he says?”

This is pretty typical of Blackaby’s teaching. Indicating that if you don’t “hear God speaking to you” it is a problem with you and probably because you are sinning or unwilling to obey. Well, what if you have searched and confessed every sin you know to do so, and still don’t “hear” God? Who of us is ever completely free from sin? Why do we continue to seek to “hear God” when He has already given us a written revelation for our lives.

It was this teaching that tormented my soul, kept me paralyzed as to how to serve God many times, and caused a class system in thinking that some Christians are just more “holy” than others. Friends, this is simply NOT TRUE. Your heavenly Father loves You dearly and He has given you a closed cannon of Scripture to study and obey. We pray to God using words as He instructed in the Lord’s Prayer, then by the Holy Spirit, does answer our prayers and providentially does guide us, but He uses the Word to do so and He never instructs us that if we aren’t “hearing Him speak” it is because we aren’t righteous enough or haven’t learned the proper techniques to sit in silence and “hear Him”.

Again, I reiterate, I am not at all saying that Ms. Moore or Mr. Blackaby are intentionally misleading folks any more than I was intentionally misleading you. I believe they have the best of intentions in their teaching, but the bottom line is we are instructed in scripture to test everything and to be Bereans and take it back to scripture to see if it is so.

The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, [a]and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, [b]for they received the word with [c]great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, [d]along with a number of prominent Greek women and men. Acts 17:10-12

For some other references to help you understand my concerns over Mr. Blackaby I refer you here:
http://www.svchapel.org/resources/book-reviews/4-christian-living/118-experiencing-god-by-henry-blackaby
http://cicministry.org/commentary/issue99.htm

When Ms. Moore promotes contemplative prayer and silence which is akin to eastern mystical mediation and when Mr. Blackaby threatens Christians that if they aren’t “hearing God” it is because they don’t have a right relationship with God and haven’t rightly learned how to read the signs of circumstances, people, and random Bible reading, they both mislead Christians into a more mystical experiential driven walk with God rather than one built upon solid Bible understanding an Biblical decision making.

I offer a few more articles and videos at the end of this letter for you to read to understand more than I can express in this short letter. If you do not use the internet or have access, please contact me. I am happy to print out these articles and mail them to you. Essentially, this is an issue over what was termed by the Reformers of the protestant Reformation, Sola Scriptura. It means Scripture Alone. It was a fundamental issue that the Reformers stood upon when protesting the Roman Catholic Teaching that men need additional teaching and experiences outside of Scripture in order to fully know how to be saved, how to know Christ, and how to know what He wants for their lives. The Reformers staunchly defended the idea that Scripture is all that is necessary for faith and living. Basing this upon the Scriptures that tell us,

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be PERFECT, THOROUGHLY FURNISHED UNTO ALL GOOD WORKS.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

I want to add that historically, Baptists, have been the ones to stand firmly against the charismatic false teachings that tried to enter the church. I really don’t know what is happening today, but many have sadly been led astray from this foundational truth and are compromising the Word by promoting eastern mysticism as a valuable tool for Christians.

Again, I want to say. I am NOT SAYING the Holy Spirit doesn’t lead us and guide us into God’s providential will. Not at All!! In fact, I truly believe that God is Sovereign and NOTHING HAPPENS that isn’t according to His decree and Sovereign will. What I am saying, however, is that in our prayer life we are never taught to sit in silence to summons God to reveal to us through inner hunches His will for our lives. We are never taught that we can’t make decisions until we know what God is “saying to us” or “revealing” to us. God has already “revealed” His will for every believer in His written Word. The cannon has been closed and all we need is to study it in CONTEXT, obey what we are told which includes renewing our minds and not being conformed to this world, so that by this renewal of our mind and knowledge of the Word, as we go through our lives, the Holy Spirit will guide us and bring to our remembrance Scripture in order to enable us to make wise decisions. But to seek to “hear Him” in some mystical fashion, and worse, to threaten Christians that if they aren’t “experiencing God” in this manner it is likely because of sin or unwillingness to obey, is at best a misrepresentation of the correct way to pray, and at worse tormenting to the soul of a genuine believer longing to follow Christ.

I love you dear sisters and I hope you understand my heart is only to warn you and apologize for not being more discerning in the past. I recognize these are heavy topics and may take you completely by surprise. I only pray, that you will understand my heart is only desirous of honoring our Lord and His Word and in loving my sisters by not refraining to speak the truth in love.

Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13

In His Name and For His Glory Alone,
Amanda Bowers

  1. Interesting that a man who was so mislead now has “seen the light…” and is able to now, without equivocation, tell us all the right way. Are you sure your right this time? What if you have another revelation of thought in 5 more years? You feign humbleness, but in fact, you now sit in the judgement seat. Hope you got it right this time…

  6. I would like to see a list of all the ones who promote Contemplative prayer. Popular authors, preachers, pastors, etc who are held in high esteem today. I have questions about several of them now that I would like to know about. Is there any out there? I think they should be exposed.

    • Well the list grows daily and there are some that are more in depth than others. For example Richard Foster and Dallas Willard are what I would call the LEADERS for sure and the most heretical; while other folks like Matt Chandler and John Piper give it a nod and endorse the aforementioned teachers, but they
themselves, have not denied any essential doctrines to the faith at this point. While Willard and Foster both have false views with regard to justification by grace through faith alone. So for what it is worth here is a list of top 100 that Lighthouse trails has posted, but I will answer any questions you have about any specific teacher you may be wondering about. http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/blog/?p=8359 With nearly every seminary offering courses and/or entire departments dedicated to Spiritual Formation, the list grows longer and longer. http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/Colleges.htm

  7. I believe you are correct in your discernment of the errors in these ‘teachings’. I ask God’s grace be abundant in your life as you continue to seek the truth & spare your sisters confusion & danger. I praise God for your humble, and courageous apology. Thank you from the very bottom of my heart!

  8. Bro. Rat believes, Craig, that after posting here her profound regret for having in the past endorsed a pernicious heresy, you offended Amanda by your subsequent defense of it.

Not to overlook your total disregard of the rules of the blog and, indeed, of courteous discourse by failing to cite your Biblical references.

    • I actually decided to block Mr. Doriot because he was talking in circles and his last description was the very exact same bad teaching of Mr. Blackaby that had me so confused and paralyzed. The Spirit of te Lord points us to the Word not away from it.

      • “I actually decided to block Mr. Doriot because he was talking in circles and his last description was the very exact same bad teaching of Mr. Blackaby that had me so confused and paralyzed.”

  9. Since Craig’s posts were removed due to his violation of this blog’s rules, Bro. Rat would like to mention what Craig said which makes him a pagan:

Craig had seen vids of some preacher, and planned to go to the guy’s conference. But somebody in Africa that Craig “barely even met” phoned him saying the preacher was a “demoniac”. So, Craig canceled.

We as Christians compare what a preacher says to what the Bible says.
What pagans like Craig do is decide on the basis of phone calls from people they hardly know !

For Craig, God doesn’t know nothing. Almost anonymous guys in Africa are who Craig follows ! Acts 17:11 ain’t in his bible. Craig stopped reading acts after the Pentecost story.

    The DataRat
    Reformation Christian

  10. This thing with the guy from South Africa warning Craig is pure paganism. How did the African guy know ? His witch doctor tell him ?

Christians, obversely, check what preachers say against what is in the Bible. It’s a Berean thing (Acts 17:11).

For all we know, the African was the actual demoniac !

In any case, Christians check stuff against the Bible. Craig and other pagans check stuff with guys from Africa they “barely even met” !

    The DataRat

    • Craig, not once but twice after my posting to Biblically support any assertions with scripture referenced (book, chapter, verse),IN CONTEXT you have not done that. And DR also warned you to do so. Instead you have railed against he clearly presented Word. I have been forced to remove your comments in order to protect any readers who might be confused by your claims that were not Biblically and appropriately supported.

  11. “Data Rat, I’ve demonstrated
to you the way in which Revelation
stands alone as a unique book of
    prophecy”

No you haven’t. You’ve made bare assertions without proof which even one of your own Biblical texts (Deuteronomy) refuted ! You’re all hot air and bare assertions without proof.

    “MANY other prophets during
    the New Testament, whose
    words were not recorded”

Because what they had to say was only for their own time !

Were there so many prophets saying so much that the Supreme Being just couldn’t keep track ? Therefore, they were left out of the Bible ?

No, of course NOT ! What the Lord wants us today to know, we have in Scripture. The unrecorded stuff is extraneous to us.

    “its simply anti-biblical to
    believe that, as is
    demonstrated in many other
    areas”

Areas of Scripture you won’t specifically mention because they don’t exist !

    “Can’t understand why ‘eschatos’
    was used by Peter”

This blog requires exact citation of all Biblical references, Craig.

“Greek words chosen in the story
of Pentecost to denote later prophecies”

Again, Craig, verses are to have complete citations in this blog ! The blog-owner deletes violating posts.

“I’ll send you the full paper
    I just completed”

Don’t want it. Want you to have a conversation with us …something you’ve been attempting to avoid.

    “someone I barely even had
    met over facebook sends me
a message at 3 am from
South Africa that God had told
him to tell me that I’m not
supposed to go to an upcoming
    conference, because its demonic”

See, THAT is the difference between us Christians and you pagans:

We would’ve checked out what the preacher said against what Scripture says. Whereas ~you~ take the word of some guy you hardly even know !

Are you sure that HE wasn’t a demon ?

Where we follow Acts 17:11, ~you~ follow Satan.

    The DataRat

  12. “study what the bible
    actually says about it”

You want us to prove that what you say is true ?

Nope, we study the Bible and extra-scriptural special revelation was only before the Canon of Scripture had been completed.

~You~ show us where in God’s Word it says otherwise !

    The DataRat
    Reformation Christian

  13. “The book of Revelation was
meant to stand on its own as
    a special book of prophecy”

Another bare-assertion without proof ! Where does it state THAT ? Or, did you get it in a private revelation only ~you~ heard ?

Cultists deny the Canon of Scripture. Christians say it is the “Word of God” because God was the content-author of the Bible. Something which your position denies !

It isn’t the ‘Revelation of John’, Mr. Doriot. It is the “Revelation of Jesus Christ”. The entire Bible is by God ! (Doesn’t matter whether the human writers even realized that.)

“we were given the same message
not to add or subtract from the bible
all the way back in Deuteronomy”

Yes, anything changing inscripturated revelation was also disallowed back then ! Which supports the conclusion that the book of Revelation is NOT a “special book” of stand-alone prophecy. False prophets (who had a different gospel) were put to death in those days !

Of course, the difference between Deuteronomy and Revelation being that the Canon of Scripture wasn’t finished. So the Lord guided His people by dreams and visions and other special revelation.

The Revelation injunction, though, is in the last chapter of the last book of the Bible. The Canon of Scripture ~now~ being closed ! Revelation 22:18 is like a period at the end of a sentence. God’s special revelation to us is finished. Why else would the Most High place it there ? So that YOU could continue to get extra-scriptural messages from heaven ? The DataRat don’t think so !

“It talks about a future time
    when 2 witnesses will come
    and prophesy”

Read v. 15b… “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever” (NIV, 1984 Edition). Ain’t in our time, Craig.

At the end of this age (the Millennium) a ~lot~ of stuff will change. But two prophets sent by God (maybe angels) isn’t the same as everyone receiving special revelation. Fire came out of their mouths killing anyone who attempted to harm them (v. 5). Can ~you~ do that, Craig ?

    In summary, then:

a.) The Bible is a whole book, and Revelation isn’t a stand-alone writing separate from the rest of the Scriptures. Only cultists attempt to fragment and dichotomize God’s Word ! You have no proof -only a bare assertion- that Revelation is unconnected to the rest of the Bible. Even your own Deuteronomy proof text works against you on this.

b.) Changing the inscripturated Word of God has been disallowed as far back as the Pentateuch. But the Canon of Scripture wasn’t completed until the Book of Christ’s Revelation was finished. The injunction in the last chapter of that last book of the Bible therefore has special meaning: The Lord has finished speaking to us.

That Deuteronomy and Revelation say the same thing merely shows that Revelation is part of the entirety of Scripture and NOT stand-alone “special prophecy”prophecy” !

c.) Revelation 11’s two witnesses hardly supports ~everybody~ receiving extra-scriptural special revelation. It doesn’t even say that they said anything that the Bible doesn’t already say ! In any event, literal fire could come out of their mouths to actually kill people. When YOU do ~that~ we will believe you also can receive special revelation !

d.) Revelation 22:18’s position in the last chapter of the entire Bible establishes that -with the completion of the Canon of Scripture- all further special revelation has ceased.

Revelation in dreams and visions and so forth only being necessary because the Lord hadn’t finished writing His Bible !

    The DataRat

  14. That’s typical of signs-and-wonders heretics. They claim they’re
biblical and Christians are “unbiblical”. But, then, when it’s time to prove their aberrant doctrines, they get out of Dodge !

Facts are, folks, the Canon of Scripture closed …just as the Bible says in the last chapter of it’s last book. Everything that God wants His People to known He has put in His Word (Bible) !

Unbelievers are never satisfied with this. They want new and novel teachings because what God has already given them doesn’t tickle their fancy. Later, in Hell, they will meet their false teachers in person and shall have all the signs and wonders they can handle !

    The DataRat

  15. Well, Craig Doriot, the Calvinist Rodent was anxious to hear from you how the Scriptures say Cessationism is “unbiblical”. Unless, of course, your claim is merely a bare assertion without Biblical warrant.

    The DataRat

  16. while i agree with much of what you are saying, you have unfortunately gone from one extreme over to the other. The gifts are very real and cessation is simply unbiblical (yet clever). I was a cessationist for 35 years until I realized it was bad doctrine. Now I’m working in the gifts as was intended for all believers in Christ.

  17. Well, at least they didn’t flog you in their synagogues ! (Matthew 10:17)

“All men will hate you because of Me” (Mark 13:13a NIV 1984 Edition).

Be proud, then, when you are “yelled at, berated, and humiliated”.
In this context it means you are being persecuted for your Lord !
When everything goes smoothly you probably aren’t doing His work.

  18. You are not alone, that seems to be a common occurance when someone tries to present thr truth about a false doctrine, teacher, etc. I just heard about a friend’s elderly mother who tried to question her pastor about one of Rick Warren’s teaching that had been brought in to her church, she was yelled at, berated, and humiliated. I have personally been called a pharisee, divisive, unloving, extreme, deceived and used by satan among other things for exposing the contemplative, spiritual formation junk, I’m not there any longer either. But I haven’t given up, I am determined to speak the truth.

  19. Bless you and thank you for sharing. I attended a local church and warned my Sunday school class about contemplative prayer and was humiliated and verbally assaulted. I never went back to that church again.

  24. Amanda,

Thank you for your courage and for your humbleness. I was so thrilled to read your article on Apprising Ministries. I have read of the development of Beth Moore and others through Pastor Ken’s site. It is very informative. It saddens me when I share such happenings and then some sisters and brothers in Christ ridicule me and quote scripture implying that I am insulting the body of Christ (Zeph 2:8-10). I am aware that my church endorses Ms. Moore and Priscilla Shirer as well. I know that both are into this contemplative prayer stuff and it bothers me a great deal. Also, when I viewed John piper along with Francis Chan and others at the Passion 2012 “contemplating” was another downer for me. I don’t know how to address this at my church and I know many will be against me. May our Lord continue to guide you in His wisdom. Aloha.

    • If they will not listen, LEAVE! Then go find a good sound Bible teaching Church.
I always ask people in your place, “who or what is your loyalty too, is it to a church, friends, denomination, family, or is it to the Lord?”. Do the right thing.

  25. I don’t see contact information and would love to have my (above) comment removed from your blog. Thank you for respecting my wishes and the best in your pursuit of Christlikeness.

  26. At the Passion 2012 conference, Beth Moore, John Piper, Louie Giglio and company taught/led an entire sports arena (45,000 college aged students) in this practice. My son’s friends in attendance of this conference told of a young girl standing outside the arena crying her eyes out because she had not heard the audible voice of God as they had instructed. Others tried to comfort her but were also distraught at not hearing a thing. This is what Louie Giglio announced during a session that had them upset:

“How many of you heard the voice of God speak specifically, clearly, directly, and personally, to you? Can you just put a hand up? I’d like you to share it. Can you put a hand up for a minute?

Just want you to look around; that’s people saying, “God Almighty (pause) the Maker of heaven (pause) the one Who’s sitting on the only throne (pause) that’s not under threat (long pause, audience cheers)—He spoke to me. He spoke to me.”

“God spoke to me.” (long pause) Don’t let the voice of the darkness, tell you that you are not (pause) worth (pause) that God would not speak to you. (pause) Don’t let him tell you, you don’t matter. (pause) God spoke to you.”

They felt they must not be “good enough Christians” for God to speak to them. Thank you for warning others of this heresy. These children are diligently opening themselves to a potentially demonic spirit to hear God’s audible voice. Please pray for them and for all the others who raised their hands.

    • Thank you for sharing this. This angers me tremendously. Please please share this with your son and friends. Please feel free to have any of them contact me. Do you mind if I share this and use this for another post? I am pretty angry to hear this….it is NOT RIGHT to tell people this. Louis is scripture twisting plain and simple!

      • Please use this any way you wish. I wanted as many people to know this because so many parents are so comfortable with their college aged children attending any Christian conference and truly feel they are in “good hands”. This is scary on so many levels.

  27. I was going to suggest the very same CIC teachings you already did, below is a quote from Bob DeWaay that sums it up pretty well. I have actually tried to contact multiple authors and teachers (including Beth Moore) whom I question, there is either no response at all, or a form letter, with one exception, Focus on the Family, who sent an actual response, though not one that actually satisfied my concern.

“The reason false teachers are dealt with publicly is that their teaching is public. One does not need two or three witnesses or a private meeting to determine if a public teaching is Biblical or not. Everyone who heard them knows what they believe and teach. At issue is whether the teaching is Biblical. False teaching damages the church, and it cannot be tolerated. In the Greek, it says they made shipwreck “in regard to the faith.” The definite article indicates that it was the content of their teaching that was wrong. It was not in accordance with “the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 1:3).”

I do not hesitate to warn of false teaching or teachers, their error is deadly to those who buy into it. Once I have researched a subject thoroughly and am convinced, according to scripture, of the error, there is an accountability, a personal responsibility I have to make sure I share that truth with others so that they too may flee. I always qualify any warning with the urging for them to be a good Berean, I never encourage anyone to just trust me, or believe me, I encourage them to check it out for themselves! That’s what everyone should do. I wish I had done it much sooner, I would have saved myself a lot of heartache.

  28. Question: Have your written to Beth Moore and Henry Blackaby to point this out to them? In fact, did you do that before exposing them? I hope so.

    • I did contact Beth Moore’s ministry, but received no reply back. However, Ms. Moore has been confronted by other ministries and has publicly stood by her promotion of contemplative prayer and participation with Richard Foster in the 2006 Be Still Video. You can read about that and read her letter here: http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/blog/?p=1444

And read her response letter where they stand by their participation here: http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/bethmoorestatement.htm

In Mr. Blackaby’s book, Hearing God’s Voice, he is clearly aware of the opposition to his teaching and spends an entire chapter defending his position (albeit with very little scriptural proof). As I stated in my letter, I am not judging the hearts or the motives of the very popular and very PUBLIC teachers, I am merely examining the fruit of their teaching (their doctrine) against the Word.

You may find these articles helpful as well with regard to whether Matthew 18 on confronting a Christian brother in sin is applicable and whether it holds any weight on the subject of public teaching. Mr. Blackaby, himself, in his chapter on this subject publicly reviews and critiques a book by another author which puts forth a different view. Public teachers are subject to public review when they claim to be speaking on the Word. That includes myself. In fact, you have publicly questioned me as to whether I have contacted Ms. Moore or Mr. Blackaby and I welcome the public critique because I have put myself out in a public forum.

Even if Matthew 18 were invoked, since other brothers and sisters have already confronted these teachers and they have stood by their teachings, the next step is to warn the church. Surely, each individual member of the church isn’t to privately go after they have already been warned and refused to recant.

  29. Mat 15:2-9 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

We just plain sin when we choose to worship God in a way we have determined is right instead of the way God has ordained. It is no different than when Eve decided to question what God had said and decided to do it her way, or Cain when he decided to worship God his own way with the offering he chose instead of the one God demanded of him. Just who do you think was behind all that? and remember what the consequences were when they did it their own way?

Just because it ‘feels’ right to you, or it makes you ‘feel’ closer to God is not proof that it is God, or that God approves of it.

  30. Thnk you for your humble heart and willingness to be so open and transparent about your journey. I too have been on a very similar journey for about 2 1/2 yrs now, that’s when my whole life was turned upside down (some suggest perhaps it was actually turned right side up). I also began my journey when I discovered the spiritual formation junk had infiltrated my church, denomination etc. As I began doing what I should have been doing all along, taking EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING back to the Word of God (I actually mistakenly thought I had been doing that) and checking it out. I discovered the teachings I had accepted as truth for the past 30 plus years was anything but truth. I had accepted many ‘charismatic’ teachings, as well as ‘word faith’, NAR (I went to many Peter Wagner conferences), spiritual warfare gobbledygook, and much, much more.

I was a real mess! I spent the first few months just plain repenting, with many tearful days. I felt like I had been brainwashed, had come out of a cult, and now had to be ‘re-programmed’. It has been a long hard journey, I have read dozens of books, spent hundreds of hours researching on the internet, just as many hours listening to cd/dvd teachings, dug deep into the Word of God, have a computer and external hard drive full of research, etc. I immediately began sharing my findings with others, with a very mixed response, I’m sure you can relate. I have also warned about Richard Foster, Beth Moore, Blackaby and many others.

I can sincerely relate with your entire experience, and it is always good to know I’m not alone. I am determined to warn as many as I can of the great apostasy and heresy that is everywhere (I used to love going into a Bible book store, now it simply brings me to tears).

    Contending earnestly for the faith…..

    • Thank you sooo much. I’m praying right now. My story like yours..and now I got workbook from a Pastors wife Henry Blackby. Horrified I sent it back today immediately. If I give you my number which I rarely give out. Can you help me tell her why I cannot do this. Also any research you’ve done and do you study the Bible alone. I’m coming out of all the junk..very tired to be honest and still repenting cuz I remember more..feel so grieved I dishonored God by not sticking with plain gospel. 701 866 1297. Please pray for me. I’m praying for anyone in this deception. Glad you are helping others. Mary PS grateful for what you wrote. I needed the confirmation as this person telling me Blaclsby Henery Experiencing God was recommended highly by a cross ✝️church. I just can’t go there..sooo you are encouraging me!

  31. Pingback: False teaching – The Heart of the Matter

  32. Amanda,
This is something that may be of help to those who think they are hearing from the Lord.

When a false prophecy is received it does not mean that there is not the supernatural involved, or that the prophetic words uttered are not real. What false means is that it is not coming from Gods throne, it is coming from the demonic pretending to be an angel of light.

This is the reason the scriptures instruct us to test the spirit of Prophecy. It is not a suggestion or request but an instruction to do so. The Spirit carrying the prophecy is required to affirm that Jesus has come in the flesh and does now sit at the right hand of God on high.

What has to be understood is that Satan has set up an alternative Christian religion that is operating alongside the real with the intent of corrupting the real and drawing the deceived to its own ranks where the fallen saints are to be brought into bondage.

What those in bondage will experience will be real and will be of the supernatural but it will not be of God. It will be counterfeit. Those caught up in it will be the ones to whom Christ will say, I knew you not even though you proclaimed my name.

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Those that do not test the spirit to ensure that they are in fact in service to the kingdom of God are going to end up as those in the above passage. Service to the counterfeit no matter how well intentioned is still service to the counterfeit. Not God. Just because you have the supernatural manifesting as ministry around you does not mean you have arrived and are not required to test and make sure you are hearing from the Lord and not a deceiving spirit.

1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
1Jn 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
1Jn 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

    • 1Co 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

By the way The Lord used the same Mat 7:21-23 scripture in my life to set me on the path I am on now.

I have personally witnessed much misuse of ‘the gift of prophecy’ as well as ‘the gift of discernment’ in the church today. I have repeatedly seen prophecy used as no more than fortune telling, and the gift of discernment or discerning of spirits used as a tool of destruction, I sarcastically call it the ‘gift of suspicion’.

I have witnessed people being ‘taught’ to give prophecy, we are all supposed to be prophets ya know. As we sat around a person being prayed for, we were told to sit there, pray in tongues, and speak out whatever popped into our heads (be it words, a vision or picture or whatever), this was recorded on a tape, and given to the person as a personal prophecy from the Lord. Scary huh? But believe me that was not an isolated situation, it’s happening everywhere. It is being inferred that if you are born again, have been prayed over to receive the Holy Spirit, don’t worry, whatever pops into your head is surely the Holy Spirit. And then there is this one, ” if it feels like God”, or “if you have peace about it” it must be God, a lot of people are travelling down some bad roads because of that!

I sat in a ‘prayer meeting’ like this and when a really goofy picture popped in my head I told what I ‘saw’, but then said “but I am not going to claim that was from the Lord!”. The pastor said nothing (it was being taped), he just looked down and shook his head, I guess I didn’t say the right thing. Needless to say I am not at that church anymore!

I have also seen kundalini manifestations being called the Holy Spirit. If you’ve never heard of that just look it up, it’s not hard to find. The deception is great, but, our God is greater.

Mat 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Is it just me, or does the way just seem to be getting narrower and narrower.

Below are a couple of good articles about prophecy:

        • No, I don’t have a personal blog, but I sure am appreciating this one, thank you! I would be glad to share my story if it would help someone else. I am so glad God is merciful because I was sure into a lot of bad stuff (believing it was God of course), and the only reason I am where I am today is because of the working of the Holy Spirit, through the Word of God. At this point I don’t regret anything I have been through, God doesn’t waste anything, He has used it all for His good as well as mine, and my desire now is to help others. My first post on this site, before I figured out how it worked, was by vnarlee, I wasn’t sure if you knew that.

I do help a woman I met via her website a year or so ago, do a little ‘editing’, basically all I do is read her most recent article and try to catch the most evident errors before she posts it (emphasis on try). Her website link is below…
Let me know what you would like me to do, you may want to know a little more about me first, I’ll do my best to accomodate.

  33. What an encouragement this article is! And a confirmation. Many years ago I went to a bible study based on Moore. There was something not right.

My background is out of the occult (more than 20 years now), and the Lord put an unsettling in me about this bible study. Then He told me that the occult was filtering into the church. Little did I know that it has been filtering in for more than half a century.

It is wise to drop all searching for gifts, and let the Bible be the base of prayer.

Although, I have found that the kingdom of Satan mimics the Kingdom of God and will use our experiences to then tell us that everything to do with revelations from God are false. Look at the circumstances that God gave the gifts in the first group that were filled with the Holy Spirit. They were preaching and teaching the Gospel of Christ. If we are looking after the things of God, then He will give those things necessary to the Body of Christ in order to do that job. Those gifts are not to be used to advance our own spiritual “plane” or to “get closer to God” as some promote.

May the Lord bless and keep you as you do His work that He has called you to do for Him.

    • This Michelle,

Based on some of my feedback, I want t make clear I do believe in the Holy Spirit guidance…and hopefully I’m not coming across a knee jerking in the other direction (certainly THAT is an issue). Thanks for your reply and as I’ve asked many others Id be interested in a testimony from those coming out of occult and/or new age/mystical backgrounds. I’m thinking I might like to run a series highlighting the many who have come out from these teachings.

  34. We just studied this as a family last Sunday:

    When pride comes, then comes shame;
But with the humble is wisdom. Proverbs 11:2

There is nothing more glorious and encouraging than seeing a saint live God’s Word. Thank you for sharing your hard-earned wisdom and for your obedience to God’s leading.

  35. To my sister in Christ, one of the signs of a genuine born again believer is the humbleness to admit when one is wrong and asking forgiveness. I praise our risen Savior for your obedience to Him and not man. I, also, gave Beth Moore the benefit of the doubt when she first began her teachings years ago, but I was initially concerned about her “ecumenism”. As a “former” Catholic, saved 27 years ago, I am very sensitive to deception and the infiltration of false teachings into bible preaching churches, beginning with Rick Warren, etc. From that ecumenical compromise she has opened herself up to a miriade of false teachings, which is usually the pattern, culminating in her promotion of New Age teachings. Please be encouraged, you are not alone. Because of Christ, Addie K. Miller

    • Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. Addie, have you ever written anywhere about your findings and knowledge? I’m trying to compile as many folks as possible who have insight into this. I’d like to maybe do a series of guest posts sharing how others are concerned and understand that these teachings are unbiblical and counter Protestant reformation. Email me at jcdisciple07@gmail.com.

God bless you for your tender conscience and love for the Lord and the brethren in posting this…which is excellent by the way….we all have fallen prey to one teacher or another, one teaching or another….and this is what we do…we learn, we warn and apologize for ever recommending them, and we move on. Thank you for such a great example of both doing that, and HOW to do that. So glad you are my sister….<3
